Introduction
Have you ever wanted to say “Please tell me more about the meeting,” “I’m researching Japanese history,” or “We talked about travel plans” in Japanese?
When you want to say “about” or “regarding” a topic, JLPT N3 grammar Nについて is one of the most useful patterns.
1. Meaning: What does Nについて mean?
Nについて means:
- about N
- regarding N
- concerning N
It is used when N is the topic, subject, or target of an action such as:
- 話す = talk about
- 聞く = ask about
- 調べる = research
- 考える = think about
- 説明する = explain
- 書く = write about
E.g., このレポートについて説明してください。= Please explain this report.
Important note
について attaches to nouns. It does not attach directly to verbs or adjectives.
So:
- [Noun] 会議について → natural
- [Verb] 行くについて → unnatural
- [Adjective] 便利について → unnatural
Tip: How to use verbs with について
If you want to say “about doing [verb]”, you must turn the verb into a noun first by adding こと (koto).
E.g., 行く (to go) → 行くこと
私が日本に行くことについて、母は心配しているが、父は喜んでいる。= My mother is worried about me going to Japan, but my father is happy about it.
2. Formation
Noun + について + clause
Examples:
- 日本について調べる = to research Japan
- その問題について聞く = to hear about the matter
Nについての + Noun
When について modifies a noun, use: Nについての + Noun
For example:
- 日本の歴史についての本 = a book about Japanese history
- その件についての説明 = an explanation about that matter
Grammar Tip: Nの vs. Nについての
Sometimes replacing についての with just の works, but their nuances are different.
- 日本の本 (NのN): Very broad. It could mean a book printed in Japan, a book written in Japanese, or a book about Japan.
- 日本についての本 (NについてのN): Very specific. It specifically means the content or topic of the book is about Japan.
Grammar breakdown
- に (particle)
Marks the target or topic. - ついて
Comes from the te-form of the verb つく.
Practical tip: memorize Nについて as one chunk.
3. Useful Examples

4. Related grammar (comparison)
Nに関して
Nに関して also means “about / regarding.” In many cases, it can replace Nについて.
- 昨日の事件に関して(≒ ~について)、警察が調査しているようです。= It appears the police are investigating yesterday’s incident.
Compared with Nについて, Nに関して often sounds a bit more formal and is common in writing, business, and official explanations.
- Nについて → neutral, very common in daily use
- Nに関して → more formal
When modifying a noun
Use “~に関する” or “~に関しての.”
- 科学に関する記事 = Articles on science
- You can also say “科学に関しての記事”, “科学についての記事”.
Again, ~に関する or ~に関しての sounds a little more formal than ~についての.
Nに対して
Nに対して is different from Nについて and Nに関して.
With Nについて / Nに関して, N is the topic or content of what you are talking, asking, explaining, or researching.
With Nに対して, N is usually the target person / group / thing that an action or attitude is directed toward.
So the difference is:
- Nについて / Nに関して = N is the content
- Nに対して = N is the target / recipient
Compare:
- 田中さんについて説明した。= I explained about Tanaka-san (to someone).
- Tanaka-san is the content of the explanation.
- 田中さんに対して説明した。= I explained something to Tanaka-san.
- Tanaka-san is the person I explained to.
In many cases, Nに対して can be replaced with the simple particle に.
- 田中さんに対して説明した。= 田中さんに説明した。
Business Japanese: につきまして
In formal situations, such as business emails or talking to customers, you will often hear or read につきまして (ni tsukimashite) instead of について.
It means exactly the same thing but is much more polite.
- 会議の日程につきまして、メールをお送りしました。= I have sent an email regarding the meeting schedule.
5. Practice
Translate the following English into Japanese using について.
| English | Example Answer |
|---|---|
| Please tell me about the schedule. | スケジュールについて教えてください。 |
| I read an article about Japanese culture yesterday. | きのう、日本の文化についての記事を読みました。 |
| We talked about our travel plans. | 私たちは旅行の計画について話しました。 |
FAQ
- QCan I add particles like は (wa) or も (mo) after について?
- A
Yes, absolutely!
- については (ni tsuite wa): Adds the topic marker “wa” to emphasize “As for [Topic]…”
- その問題については、まだ解決していません。= As for that problem, it has not yet been resolved.
- についても (ni tsuite mo): Means “also about [Topic]”
- 日本の歴史についても知りたいです。= I want to know about Japanese history, too.
- については (ni tsuite wa): Adds the topic marker “wa” to emphasize “As for [Topic]…”
- QIs there a polite version of Nについて?
- A
In formal business settings or polite emails, use Nにつきまして (ni tsukimashite) instead. It carries the exact same meaning but shows more respect to the listener or reader.
- QWhat is the difference between Nについて and Nに関して?
- A
They both mean “about/regarding N” and are mostly interchangeable.
However, Nについて is used in everyday conversation and is more standard. Nに関して (ni kanshite) sounds more formal, stiff, and is commonly used in news reports, essays, or business documents.
- QI want to say “I’m thinking about eating.” Can I say “食べるについて考える”?
- A
No, because について must connect to a noun. To fix this, turn the verb into a noun by adding こと (koto).
The correct sentence is: 食べることについて考える (Taberu koto ni tsuite kangaeru).
