Want to report what someone else said in Japanese?

Whether it’s “She said she has a part-time job” or “My friend said Japanese is fun,” you’ll need one essential phrase:

〜と言いっていました
= (Someone) said that 〜

In this article, you’ll learn how to use this grammar with verbs, adjectives, and nouns in the short form (plain form), so you can talk about what other people said naturally and correctly.

1. Grammar Structure: ~と言っていました

7. FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Q
Can I say 言いました instead of 言っていました?
A

Yes, you can use 言いました, but the nuance is different.
言っていました often carries a reported-speech nuance — it tells the listener what someone said earlier, with a sense of relaying information.
言いました is a simple past statement meaning “said,” without that reported-information feel.

  • 先生せんせいは、明日あしたテストがあると言いっていました。
My teacher said that there’s a test tomorrow.
→ You’re relaying the teacher’s information to someone else.
  • ウォルト・ディズニーは、夢ゆめを見みることができれば、それは叶かなうと言いいました。
Walt Disney said, “If you can dream it, you can achieve it.”
→ A simple past quotation of what he said.
Q
Is there a more casual way to say 「~と言っていました」 (to itte imashita)?
A

Yes, definitely! In casual conversations with friends or family, it’s extremely common to use: 言ってた (itteta) instead of 言っていました (itte imashita)
So, the casual equivalent is [Short Form] + って言ってた (tte itteta).
Example: 「明日来るって言ってたよ。」 (Ashita kuru tte itteta yo. – [He/She] said [he/she]’ll come tomorrow!) って (tte) instead of と (to)
